Love this. It is quite beautiful. We are just now revisiting some of Sylvie's early issues now that she is in 3rd grade, has a really mean reading/writing teacher which are triggering early insecurities issues and frustrations. I can talk with you about a number of the issues you mentioned. One thing about being an FCC Prez (yes I am doing that and teaching at college-- call me crazy!) is that I've been to lots of forums on Chinese adoption issues and have read lots of books. Maybe I've read one that you haven't. Plus I have a kid who is teaching me as we go along. I have just learned that my confident, crazy, singing and twirling in school girl is a) a perfectionist and b) very competitive!) So, when she refused to walk into the gymnastics gym the answer is: Sylvie: "I messed up last time and can't face the teacher!'' Me: "HUH? You're doing back handsprings, and the teacher is trying to make you arch back further. He's not trying to scare you or be mean to you." Sylvie: "I can't do back handsprings. I stink!" Ahhh. Her school guidance counselor asked me to talk to her about being perfect and being competitive. I asked: "How do you feel when someone does a handspring better than you?" Sylvie: "I get really MAD and jealous!" We've always counseled her that the "green-eyed monster" was something to avoid. I guess jealousy and competitiveness in her mind was a no-no so she's bottled up her competitive nature. I told her very gently (with Steve adding examples) that it is OK to be competitive, to want to do better than the next guy, but that we DO NOT do anything to hurt that other person -- not words or actions or fighting. It's ok to be jealous, but we don't hurt anybody, right? It's take 2 months of struggle to get her to walk back into the gym. She's baaaak and now mom and dad know a lot more about their mystery girl.

It may be that TJ has such high standards for himself that he gets really upset at facing any obstacles. We have been told to lay off the expectations and to ignore the things that make her "go there."

Answer to encopresis (if it's what I think it is) is fiber, fiber, fiber in the form of: Benefiber tablets every day. Purple is the best!!! Really do not need to find out "what" caused it. Just make as light about it as possible (if that's possible) esp. since I've diagnosed a perfectionist and a tough on himself type of kid. Geeze those Guangdong "Cantonese" are strong willed!!! Eat "pilly" twice a day, especially purple ones will make this go away!! Less is more.

Give me a call!!! ginab

What a great story, Helen. All of it is so funny I wanted more!!!! Esp. Meimei's comment at the end. The girls, especially Davi, seem very funny in a self-suffering sort of way when it comes to TJ. They complain, and then accept. We really want to see you and hope to get up there soon, unless you're coming this way in the summer!
